Publications & Research

Dr. Sumeet Karna is actively involved in clinical research with a focus on urinary stone disease, endourology, pediatric urology, antibiotic resistance (AMR), and rare urological conditions. He has authored and co-authored 16+ peer-reviewed publications in national and international journals, including BMC Infectious Diseases, BMC Urology, the Journal of Nepal Health Research Council, B & B Medical Journal (BBMed) and others.

His research interests include improving outcomes of minimally invasive stone surgery, understanding antibiotic resistance patterns in urinary tract infections, documenting unusual and complex urological cases from resource-limited settings, and gradually integrating technology and AI-assisted methods into clinical research and data analysis.

Research Interests

Endourology & Stone Disease

Outcomes of PCNL (standard, mini, super-mini), ureteroscopic stone surgery, and strategies to optimize stone clearance, reduce complications, and adapt minimally invasive techniques to low-resource environments.

Antibiotic Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance patterns in urinary isolates, and the implications for empirical antibiotic choices, antibiotic stewardship, and policy.

Pediatric Urology

Safety and outcomes of pediatric stone disease in real-world clinical practice, management of hydronephrosis, PUJ obstruction, posterior urethral valve (PUV), and urachal anomalies.

Rare & Complex Urological Cases

Case reports and case series describing unusual presentations such as renal replacement lipomatosis, spontaneous renal pelvic perforation, unusual metastasis from renal cell carcinoma, retroperitoneal fibrosis, and other rare urological entities.

Key Recent Publications

Antibiotic Resistance in Urinary Isolates

Burden of antibiotic resistance in urinary isolates – BMC Infectious Diseases, 2025.
First regional data in over a decade from Far-Western Nepal, describing very high levels of multidrug and extensively drug-resistant urinary pathogens and highlighting the need for urgent antibiotic stewardship.

Experience from Dhangadhi evaluating stone clearance and perioperative outcomes of SMP for renal stones in a real-world, resource-limited setting.

Mono-polar TURP outcomes

Perioperative Complications in Monopolar Transurethral Resection of Prostate – Asian Journal of Research and Reports in Urology, 2021.
Single center based outcomes of monopolar TURP over 10 years done in patients with enlarged prostate and urinary obstruction.

Effect of decreasing PCNL size

Impact of Miniaturization on Early Outcome of Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy – Journal of Nepal Health Research Council, 2019.
Describes how switching from standard PCNL to mini-PCNL to supermini-PCNL decreases bleeding rate and complications.
